This complete kitchen transformation breathed new life into a charming bungalow while preserving the character and style of the original home. From start to finish, the approximately three-month project focused on creating a more functional kitchen without sacrificing its historic appeal, and the homeowner was thrilled with the results.
One of the biggest challenges was the kitchen’s lack of functionality. The home’s only sink was a small sink located in the butler’s pantry, so we completely reconfigured the space by installing new plumbing, drain lines, venting, drywall, and electrical to support a modern kitchen layout. We also repurposed an unused broom closet by adding custom shelving, transforming it into valuable storage.
To improve both the layout and natural light, we removed a large existing window, reframed the opening, and installed smaller custom-sized windows that complemented the home’s architectural style while creating more usable wall space for cabinetry. The entryway between the butler’s pantry and kitchen was also enlarged, creating a more open and inviting flow between the two spaces.
Custom cabinetry was built throughout the kitchen to maximize storage and functionality. An outdated built-in china cabinet was removed and replaced with a beautifully crafted custom china cabinet, with the electrical system relocated to accommodate the new design.
One of the most rewarding parts of the project was preserving the home’s original character. The homeowners wanted the new backsplash to match the original tile in the butler’s pantry. After an extensive search, we located a matching tile, allowing the new kitchen to blend seamlessly with the home’s historic charm. The homeowner was delighted with the result.
The original laminate flooring was removed, revealing a challenging subfloor covered with heavy adhesive, staples, and no underlayment. Before the new flooring could be installed, the surface had to be carefully sanded, repaired, and leveled to create a stable foundation. The kitchen was then finished with classic black-and-white tile flooring that perfectly complements the bungalow’s timeless design.
The finished kitchen is bright, functional, and thoughtfully designed, combining modern conveniences with the craftsmanship and character that make this beautiful bungalow so special.
